Needlessly making things more difficult

"According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), in the late 1970s, 16 percent of US state and federal prison admissions stemmed from violations of parole and some types of probation. This number climbed to a high of 36 percent in 2008, and as of 2018 (the last year for which data is available) was 28 percent." [Source]

That's the 'logos.'

Now, I don't know what part of that 28 percent comes from these 'pathos' examples -- crossing state lines to visit a family member in a hospital, being late to a parole meeting, or being out past curfew to get medicine for a child -- but the principle is that we shouldn't make reintegrating unnecessarily difficult on people.

Justice has a role. So should mercy.
