"Forcing yourself to be accepted by people is a waste of time," should not be the moral of this story -- in fact, it's the exact opposite of the lesson to be learned.
What the original post doesn't tell you is that George McLaurin sued the University of Oklahoma for not providing even the "separate" facilities under its "separate but equal" policy. He won the case through a unanimous decision from the U.S. Supreme Court in 1950, and OU had no choice but to admit him into its doctorate program.[Source]
Pursuing and winning a U.S. Supreme Court decision is about as far from "don't force yourself to be accepted" as I can think of. George McLaurin was an amazing individual to have accomplished what he did, but no one should have to deal with the same garbage he put up with.
