It's far easier to generate outrage if you've got both video and a pithy message that fits nicely in a meme. If it goes viral, great -- others have done the hard work for you.
Wage theft, on the other hand, requires villifying the abstract, and not everyone has a grasp for the big numbers involved. [Source]

It's easier to condemn something if it doesn't take too much brain power, and we can move on quickly to other things. Which problem is *actually* a bigger problem is immaterial -- it's whatever generates the most clicks....
