Japanese years
When you go to a hospital in Japan, they give you an identification card. It lists your birthdate, but does it according to Japanese years.
"S50" means 50th year of Emperor Showa (昭和). Right now, it's Reiwa 3 (令和). Yeah, that makes the subtraction far more difficult, but there are apps for that.
