We had a choice: stay in Afghanistan like we did South Korea, or excuse ourselves like we did Vietnam.
There were costs either way, but we went with Option B.
Having spent almost a year there, I'm sad about it, but I didn't see a way to get to our desired end state.
A domestic blame game will follow, just like in 1949 when Chiang Kai-Shek lost China's Mainland, but this tragedy was a long time coming.
