What is patriotism?

What does it mean to be a patriot? Does it only mean loving one's country as it is, or does it also include wanting one's country to be a better place?

Autocracies (no matter the country) argue the former, because they want to keep the public passive and docile. If the only patriots are those who approve of what the government does, any effort to reform is -- by definition -- treasonous.
