Stinky fish

When i was growing up, I remember my grandfather eating a particular kind of fish. It was greasy, seemed like it was smoke, and it didn't smell very good. My sister called it "stinky fish." This forelle I saw in the neighborhood grovery store (Lidl) reminded me of it, and it made me wonder if it was the same thing. It also made me wonder if he'd liked it before, or if he started liking it because of his time in Germany.
