University in jeopardy from spiteful governor
Ben Cayetano remains in power, and that means University of Hawai`i students in faculty have a lot to fear.
In June of this year, Cayetano attempted to delay around $51 million in state paychecks until the completion of the 1999 budget. University of Hawai`i faculty protested and sued for their $7 million portion of the paychecks.
The new budget showed a nearly $7 million decrease in the University of Hawaii's allocation of the state budget. Coincidence? Not likely, considering that Cayetano vowed to do exactly that.
During the 1998 gubernatorial campaign, the University of Hawai`i Professional Assembly decided to endorse Cayetano's Republican opponent, Linda Lingle.
Caytano has every reason to be angry at UH; their campaign to get fiar treatment has challenged his power in the past, as well as his support in the election.
Cayetano has proven before that he cares nothing for UH; he has shown that he is perfectly willing to show his distaste in making decisions regarding UH.
Now that he'll be in power for another four years, what will become of us?
