Iris Chang commits suicide

She authored "Rape of Nanking," one of the most horrifying pieces of literature I have ever read. It opened up my mind to how people can react when they have the bounds of society removed and have a gun put in their hands. Even someone completely "civilised" can commit gruesome acts when the environment is right, as even the Abu Ghraib prison abuses can testify to.

It's also interesting to look at Japan's reaction to her book; once see how "enlightened" or "civilised" people really are when their self-righteousness is threatened. It applies to us as well. We Americans can criticize the Japanese all we want, but we have wrongs of our own we refuse to teach our young. Book link

Her death is particularly sad because she is survived by her husband and two year-old son. She was 36. Link
