For me, Veteran's Day started off like any other work day. After the memorial service led by President Obama finished yesterday, we started taking down the wall.
We were within a couple hours of being done and having Veteran's Day completely off, but the civilian workers decided to call it quits at about 6:30. We got out at 7.
The decision to put the job off to the next day may have been affected by the fact civilians get paid triple-time for working on holidays. If that were the case, it would be like a kick in the teeth to us soldiers.
You can imagine the hue and cry that would reach the heavens if you made mothers work on Mothers' Day -- apparently the money is worth it to the civilians to have us come in on Veteran's Day.
The nice thing is that we finished by 11:00 (after starting at 6:30 am). I was able to get my hair cut for free at the PX barber shop (YES! I still tipped the lady) and get home in time for lunch.
At about four, the family and I went out to Applebee's for an early dinner, since they were offering a free entree to any veteran or active duty military. Though the line was outrageous, the dinner was great -- fully worth it. Thanks, Applebee's.
Although it wasn't fun at the beginning, the day ended well.
