My thoughts on the Fort Hood shooting

I had off on the Thursday when the shooting happened, so it wasn't
really until today that I had to deal with my thoughts on the matter.

There's the surprise that 1.) and officer, 3.) a major, 3.) a mental
health care worker would do this. It's hard to believe that someone who
could have resigned after his initial service requirement would have
continued in his position; even moreso that he had incurred an
additional obligation if he was so conflicted.

Reading the stories of those killed was very sobering. These people came
from very different backgrounds, ages, ranks, and situations.

My commander held a formation and talked about prejudice within our
ranks -- apparently some people had made some disparaging remarks. I
can understand why they would think that way, but the randomness of it
all defeats me. While my personal notions of a person's safety haven't
changed, I'm at a loss to explain things.

If you can't feel safe in the middle of an Army post, where can you?
