A short, crazy week -- The world goes mad

As if the normal workload weren't enough to drive us all crazy, my unit also experienced several just-plain-odd events.

On Wednesday, while we were running in a group, a deer ran across the street and hit two of my soldiers. The deer fell to the ground, stunned, then scrambled up and ran off into the forest. You know it's going to be a wacky week when you hit a deer crossing the street with your formation. Fortunately, it didn't have any antlers or someone could have been seriously hurt.

Then there's the story of the guy who tried to go AWOL in front of his entire company. He apparently got fed up with Army life after being corrected for not running during -- of all things -- a unit run. So he walked off to his room, changed into civilian clothes, grabbed his guitar, and threw all his Army gear into a dumpster. Let's just say he didn't get very far.

What makes this even more comical to me is the fact WE'RE IN KOREA! I'm curious to know just how this guy intended to get back to the U.S., if he'd even thought about that.

Lastly, there's the "most important captain in the Army" story. As one of our companies prepares to close down, there's the question of what to do with its people. Some of the single soldiers will relocate, some of the families will change units, and others will go home early (tour curtailments).

Yet of all the people whose tours are cut short, that company's commander has to leave *immediately* after the closure ceremony. Apparently, his branch manager simply *cannot* allow the guy's schedule to be delayed so that he can properly dispose of the rest of the property. He'll have to sign the remnants over to a lieutenant, who will handle things from there.

Never mind taking care of the company's people or equipment -- this guy's got somewhere else he *has got* to be.

Never a dull moment.
