The "drink and ditch" plan

I had a soldier this week come up with a scheme they must have thought no one had ever done before: run up a bar tab just before leaving the country.

Over the course of a number of weeks, this person built up about an $800 tab, and promised to pay once they got back to the U.S. (Yeah, right.) So the bar owner called both me and the military police. When the military police called me, I managed to prevail upon them to give them one day to come up with the money.

With the assistance and motivation of this person's supervisor, the soldier contacted their parents and managed to scrounge up the money to pay off the bar tab. With the bar owner mollified, the military police were content to let the soldier return to the U.S. on schedule.

So hooray to the supervisor who took care of his soldier, and hooray to me for fending off the MPs for a day. Takin' care of business....
