Lying flat

I love reading about online Chinese language trends. The newest trend is the term "Lying Flat“ (躺平, tăngpíng), and it refers to young people rejecting expectations of ambition, career success marriage, childbirth, and -- general -- notions of national greatness. [Source]
In a country where materialism and patriotism have been harnessed to serve the goals of the state, it's interesting to see people protest just "dial out" and stop playing the game.

"The grass that lies flat," goes the thinking, "can't be cut by the sickle." The reference to one of the symbols of communism is telling. The government is so concerned about the trends that -- of course -- they're censoring the word on the Internet.

Fascinating stuff.
