When slower is better: buying a gun

"Seriously folks, what on earth is wrong with asking people to wait seven days before they buy a pistol?” – William F. Buckley Jr., letter to Ronald Reagan, April 1, 1991.

Georgia's no-wait guns laws allowed Robert Aaron Long to quickly buy gun

Back in the days of snail mail, it took time for the FBI to do a background check. That wa a good thing, because it forced people to calm down before they killed someone.

Later, as databases became linked together, background checks could be done instantaneously, but wasn't necessarily an improvement.

Sometimes the problem is not with the person's background, but their emotional state. The process of buying a gun may have become quicker, but that's not the best outcome.

Buckley and Reagan came to support the Brady Bill, which passed in 1993.
