In the United States, 9/11 is the day for moments of silence. In Japan, it's 3/11.
Today marked the 10th anniversary of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster. In Japanese, it's pronounced Tohoku chi-hou tai-heiyou okijishin (東北地方太平洋沖地震, literally, "Tohoku area open sea earthquake"). Alternative names are the "Great earthquake disaster of East Japan" (東日本大震災, Higashi nihon daishinsai) or simply 3.11 (三点一一, san-ten-ichi-ichi)
While 9/11 in the United States resulted in about 3,000 dead, 3/11 caused the deaths of about 20,000, with another 2,500 missing.
