Discretion and valor

In 1996, Kerry Strug under-rotated the landing of her first vault attempt, causing her to fall and injure her ankle. Nevertheless, completed her second vault. As a result, she suffered a third-degree lateral sprain and tendon damage, and had to be carried onto the medal podium.

The gymnastics team won the gold medal, but news of Strug's heroism papered over an uncomfortable reality -- it was unnecessary. Although it was unknown at the time, their score would have been enough for the gold medal without Strug's second vault.

Some have criticized Simone Biles for bowing out of certain gymnastics events in this Olympics.

Not me.
