During that first weekend, I went snowshoeing in the Alps. Now, when I first pictured "showshoes" (des raquettes) in my mind, I thought of the old-style wooden ones. However, the ones we used were modern. I didn't realize there even was such a thing.

For such a novel experience, I'm surprised I didn't take more pictures, but that was one of the things with film-based cameras. With every picture you took, you had to question whether there might be something better sometime later.

"No pictures on the way up," was a good philosophy for photography. But I didn't realize until too late that we weren't going back the way we came.
