Look for the "E"

In the U.S., the ground floor is considered the first floor. You start counting with number one.

Germany, however, is like France. You start at the rez-de-chaussée / Erdgeschoss, and then start counting.

This frequently throws me off. I'll get into an elevator and push "1" without thinking, and then be mystified when I don't end up on the ground floor.
