Spring break trip 2023 (D2b: Luxembourg)

After getting back from the cemetery, we we all took a bus downtwon. One of the things that stood out about Luxembourg was the way French and Franconian German intermingle. There, we did a walking tour of the city. We started out at the Monument of Remembrance, nicknamed the Gëlle Fra ("Golden Lady). It is dedicated to the war dead of both World War I and II.

If you're ever moved by the spirit to get a tattoo, I suppose the nearby Holdy Ghost Tattoo would be the place to go. We then went to the central plaza, where we ate at the McDonald's. True, we don't go places to ea their American food, but I do find it interesting to see what special things different countries have on the menu, and it was nice to eat at the tables outside.

We then walked to the ducal palace. My son wanted a picture of him in front of it.

Then we went to the city museum (though I don't have any pictures of that.) From there we went down the hill to the lower part of the city. These are the Bock Casemates; they were used for protection during World War II. I have always thought of Luxembourg as being one of the "Low Countries," but Luxembourg is anything but flat.
We walked along the Alzette River to the Neumünster Abbey.

Yesterday I got a picture of the abbey fron the upper city. On the right is the reverse -- a picture of the upper city from the abbey.

This is the Eglise Saint Jean du Grund (Church of Saint John the Baptist). on the grounds of the Neumünster Abbey.
For dinner, we went to a mall in the central business district. There, we ate at a place called Dean & David. It seems to be a California-based chain, but I'd never eaten at one before. (It turns out there's one in Wiesbaden as well.)

Afterward, we got snacks from a grocery store. It was interesting to see flavors that we'd never seen in the U.S., but I'm not going to get ketchup-flavored potato chips. We did get some Oreo popcorn, though.
